For some time now, I have been thinking that the emergency services in Japan are a little more sedate than the ones I used to encounter in England.
In England it wouldn’t be unusual for you to (more…)

While not exactly being a 3 day monk, I think I might be able to class myself as a 10 day trainee priest.
Actually, that might be being a bit unfair to myself. Over the past few days, (more…)

As you can see from my schedule, there are a few classes that have spaces in this month.
I was hoping that maybe people reading this might be interested in, or know someone interested in taking lessons.
The class on the 19th of this month, has two spaces available. The class on the 21st has one space.

Although it may seem like a point system that rewards food for going on holiday, the title refers to a buzzword in British food/ cooking circles. (Circles here does not mean the Japanese サークル)
It has to do with how far the food travelled from producer to plate.
In the increasingly international world we live in, it has become easier and easier to buy food from far-flung places. This has a knock on effect that means we can eat almost any kind of food all-year-round.
While this is a good thing for the consumer, there are a few negative effects.
The first is environmental. In order to transport this food all over the world, it takes planes, trains and automobiles (this is the name of a film starring Steve Martin and John Candy, not a legitimate English phrase), therefore there is pollution.
Other people complain that we have lost touch with the seasonality of food. For example, food and dishes that are grown and cooked in the winter are generally designed to give us lasting energy and warmth. Whereas food in the summer is designed to give the opposite effect. We eat certain foods at certain times of the year for reasons.
So what do you think? Do you like being able to eat tomatoes and asparagus in winter? Or do you think we should be more sensitive to the environment?

Although this kind of thing has been done one many websites before, stick “Japanese English” or “mistranslation Japanese English” into your favourite search engine and there should be a fair few sites, but I thought I would try to do a feature on strange English in Japan.
The purpose of this is as a kind of grammar/vocabulary correcting exercise.
I will post the photo of the strange English and the answer as to why I thought is was strange will be in the “Continue Reading” section. So try to work out what is strange and then have a look at the answer for yourself.
Please feel free to leave a comment as well.
Also, there will be a category for Badlish, and if anyone out there has a good photo I can use, feel free to send it in!
